Dear Friends,

Well it looks like spring has finally sprung! It has been a long winter and I am starting to see a little bit more movement on the social front. We are starting to leave our homes a little more and looking for new opportunities to socialize and meet people.

Spring is one of the best times to take the leap and attend a singles night or party. At this point in the year everyone is still eager to try new things and keep New Year’s promises (well, most of them!).

If it’s the first time you are attending a singles event then it might be helpful to have a few tips on etiquette to be armed with!

Be Open

There is no point whatsoever in attending a singles event if you are going to isolate yourself in a corner and make it difficult for people to engage you in conversation. Be open! Take chances on speaking to people and respond to other people politely and courteously. It will go a long way.

Mind Your Manners

Really you should be observing this at all social events – not just singles parties. Be careful not to talk over people, avoid chewing with your mouth open and please cover your mouth when you sneeze! These things are an immediate turn off and guaranteed to repel any potential interest.

Be Sensitive

Remember everyone else is just as apprehensive as you are. Try to keep any wild thoughts and opinions to yourself – especially if it is about something personal to the people with whom you are speaking. Some people may not take things to heart but others will be super sensitive, so try to be mindful of that.

Have Fun!

The most important thing is to make the effort to engage yourself in the activity and have fun! The more fun you are having the more likely it is you will relax, start chatting and get the best out of the evening.

Hope this helps!

Kind regards,

Kim Rix

Dear SaVVy Friends,

Interpersonal skills are vital to the success of your social event.  The trouble is, no one ever gives us any training in how to best communicate with other people, so this can be a tricky one for many of us.  I’d like to offer some tips on interpersonal communication that will help you to enjoy your social events even more!

DON’T FORGET TO SMILE:  A smile goes a long way, don’t forget to clean your teeth, but a friendly smile makes other people comfortable around you.

EYE CONTACT:  Eye contact is very important; it helps people to connect with you.  Avoiding eye contact makes people believe you have something to hide or that you do not want to connect with them.  Americans particularly find a lack of eye contact even in shy people very rude.  Don’t confuse this with staring at someone; make light eye contact with people you are speaking with.

SPEAK CLEARLY:  Too many people mumble when they’re under pressure.  Speak slowly and surely, don’t mumble or speak under your breath.  Make sure you look at the person you’re speaking to, and project your words to them with the intent that they hear each word with clarity.

LISTEN:  For clues on what to talk to new people about, simply listen to what they tell you.  Their speech will be peppered with clues and topics that you can later use to continue the conversation.  But don’t force it, sometimes, when conversation dies, a simple smile is just fine.  Never talk over someone, it’s the height of rudeness.

COMPLAINING:  Avoid whining and complaining when you talk to people.  It gets old and boring very quickly.  Sure it’s fun to connect with someone during times of adversity, but complaining about the host’s food is just bitchy.  Don’t moan about your partner or complain about your job, it’s yawnsworthy!

Dear friends of The SaVVy Club®

Are you the nominated party organiser, in charge of arranging something fun for the office crowd to do this Christmas? Or perhaps you are planning on gathering your friends together and looking for a fun way to celebrate Christmas?

Last week, I wrote about the different types of Christmas Party Packages being offered by London venues.  Today, I would like to make a few alternative suggestions. The all-inclusive, fun themed nights and exclusive/shared party nights are great  – but why not start with one of the following activities to get you into the festive mood before heading to your venue to party the night away?

Here are our Top Ten group activities…guaranteed to make you laugh, guaranteed to get people mixing and, and guaranteed excellent photographic opportunities!

1. Hire a private screen

Show a Christmas film such as The Grinch. Get everyone to dress up as a character in the film. Best dressed wins (and buys the first round).

2. Cocktail making

Each guest brings a different bottle (spirit). See what cocktails you can create.

3. Cookery masterclass

Gather all your friends or colleagues in a large kitchen. A culinary expert demonstrates how to cook a meal. Try an Indian cookery demo for an alternative Christmas Dinner.

4. ‘Around London’ Competition

Create a Task List. Meet at Hyde Park at 8am. Split into teams of two. Photographic evidence must be taken on completion of each task e.g.  1 – take a photo standing outside Harrods.  2 – Take a pedal-boat across the Serpentine. 3 – Find a market stall that sells an “I love London” T-shirt.

Pedibus Drink Tour5. Booze Cruise

Hire a Pub Crawler, a mobile bar (also known as a pedibus), – up to 12 people sit on bar stools with pedals so they can drink as they travel from venue to venue.  How about a tour of London’s best champagne bars?

6. Have an auction

Get everyone to bring an unwanted Christmas present from last Christmas – highest bidder wins. The money raised goes into a kitty for the drinks.

7. Christmas carols

Gather your friends and family (or colleagues) around a grand piano.  It’s light-hearted and great fun.

8. The Santa Run

Get a team together and enter into the Santa Run. The spirit of the day is about having fun and you even get a free Santa costume!

9. Ice Sculpture Making

Design a sculpture, not forgetting to include a drinking funnel/slide. Take it in turns to drink and pour the vodka down the slope.  Tip: Wear a waterproof apron & gloves.

10. Learn how to ‘Moonwalk’

Hire a professional dance teacher to learn the moves to Michael Jackson’s Thriller. You can also try jive, salsa or quickstep. Your evening could culminate in a showcase performance when you and your fellow dancers can show off your new moves.

For more creative ideas like these, talk to us. As an exclusive social events club we specialise in conjuring memorable experiences all year round.

When we think of Gourmet Food, we often associate it with the term ‘Epicurious’ – inspired by Epicurus, the 3rd Century BC Greek philosopher, who advocated the pursuit of pleasurable sensations in the search for ‘Good’.

In our search for the Gourmet Food experience, connoisseurs and enthusiasts seek out the best culinary experiences from across the globe; not just in food. The etymology of the word ‘Gourmet’ is from the French term for ‘wine taster’ – and wine tasting is certainly a key activity for those seeking sensory satisfaction.

Over the past decades, the explosion of celebrity cookery programmes has left audiences hungry to explore their foodie fantasies. The United Kingdom has led the charge; whether by the extravagant antics of Keith Floyd in the 1980’s (who certainly enjoyed a drop of good wine himself) right through to the blustering magic of Gordon Ramsay.

But when we think of British cuisine, what springs to mind? There’s a lot more to our culinary tastes than fish and chips or toad in the hole. It is telling that our most popular national dish comes from Indian food, and indeed every High Street is exploding with a variety of fares from Catalonian cooking to Nepalese delights.

The desire for variety in our modern diet originating from countries far and wide, has certainly whetted the appetite of the nation, and has been responsible for the huge growth in demand for Gourmet Food tours in the UK and across the world.

So what sort of adventures can the British Gourmet Food explorer embark upon? To sample a taste of the delights of a UK Gourmet Food Tour, contact Kim at info@savvyclub.co.uk.

Dear friends,

The Breast Cancer Care Fashion Show is a unique and truly special charity event in London. Each year 2,000 guests over two Shows celebrate the strength and achievements of 26 women and men with two things in common. They have all been diagnosed with breast cancer and have all been selected to take their first ever steps on the catwalk at the Breast Cancer Care Fashion Show.

The Show moves and inspires guests and focuses on showing that despite a diagnosis of breast cancer, the experience of surgery and often dramatic implications to self-image, people diagnosed with breast cancer can still look and feel absolutely fantastic.

The Show is professionally styled and we are once again supported by Sassoon and Estee Lauder for hair and make up ensuring that our models will make a stunning and glamorous debut. The catwalk showcases the best in fashion and is the pinnacle of both the Afternoon Tea and black tie Evening Dinner.

The highlight of the event is the catwalk Show, but the glamour doesn’t stop there. Opening the Show, Strictly Come Dancing stars Darren and Lilia have performed a dazzling salsa; among our many hosts over the years David Walliams, Jerry Hall, Lisa Snowden have all ably assisted in presenting. Lemar, Katherine Jenkins, Tony Christie and Jonathan Ansell have performed sets especially for the night. And guests Geri Halliwell, Kenny Goss, Natasha Kaplinsky, Cherie Booth QC, Sir Phillip Green, Gail Porter and Max Clifford have all shown their support. Sensational experiences and prizes secured for the live and silent auctions, luxury raffles and other gift dynamics make this an impressive fundraising event.

Date: Wednesday 6 October 2010

Venue: The Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London

The Afternoon Show (£65) and Evening Show (£175) still have ticket availability. Book tickets and show your support for people affected by breast cancer on 020 7960 3554 or visit www.breastcancercare.org.uk/theshow
