Are Social Events the NEW therapy?

Dear Friends
Â
Apologies for being off the Blog radar for the past few weeks, I’ve been so busy organising this year’s social events at The SaVVy Club® that I simply haven’t had the time to blog about them at the same time. But now I’m back and will be keeping the blog updated on a regular basis from now on!
Â
I’ve recently been reading that psychologists in the USA have discovered that people experience greater pleasure from spending their money on attending social events and experiences, than purchasing objects – clothes, cars, perfume, shoes etc. According to research, during periods of economic gloom and cold weather (we have both at once, worst luck!) people derive more satisfaction from attending social events and interactive experiences than ‘things’.
Â
This counters a long-established belief that individuals are obsessive consumers of things and get the most therapeutic diversion from new purchases, or ‘retail therapy’ as it is often called. But purchasing objects as a form of therapy does not provide ongoing relief because eventually materialistic goods lose their interest and find their way to the back of the closet, only to leave us with an insatiable hunger for the next buying binge.
Â
Social events and experiences on the other hand are not selfish, solo events that offer short term fixes, instead, they offer a deeper social stimulation which lifts the moods and further generates further future social encounters.Â
Â
During the colder months, we tend to wrap up warm, stay inside and cut ourselves off from other people. This only increases the likelihood of Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD syndrome. By encouraging ourselves to leave the home, take some exercise, meet and interact with other people and experience a great new social experience by attending an event, we naturally counter SAD and leave with much more than just another new object.
Â
Kind regards,
Kim Rix
