An Evening at the Theatre: A Social Event with Style
Mar 5th, 2009 by savvyclub
Dear Friends,
Â
A stylish evening out at the theatre is a wonderful way to unwind. Which other social event allows you access to sit among the stars and have an evening of top rate drama, comedy or musical theatre that tops the experience of London’s West End? But look a little further beyond the West End and you’ll find more than just big names and camp musicals.
Â
Back in 1913, visiting a London theatre without your finest evening wear would have had you escorted from the premises, these days, you can dress however you like, but it’s so much fun to dress to impress and wear your favourite frock for the evening.
Â
But what should you go and see? It’s tough to decide:
Â
NEW PLAYS: Once upon a time, it was only the Royal Court that really produced new plays. They still have an excellent reputation for the best in cutting edge playwrights, but these days more theatres are getting in on the act. The Soho Writers’ Theatre, Hampstead Theatre (in Swiss Cottage) and the Finsborough Theatre all present edgy new writing for something a little less subdued.
Â
MUSICALS:  New musicals and old are ever present in London’s West End. Why not take a group of friends to see Wicked, Spring Awakening or the deliciously naughty Avenue Q! If you fancy something a bit tamer, Oliver and Lion King are always popular and family friendly options!
Â
SHAKESPEARE: Head to the Globe, for the truly authentic open-air experience of Shakespeare, as it may have been performed in his day. Or if you prefer the classics done with the tradition of the Royal Shakespeare Company, they’re currently performing The Taming of The Shrew at the Novello Theatre. See Shakespeare done at its gripping best, not some dusty reading you remember from school!
Â
An evening at the theatre is an entertaining distraction from the daily grind. In April; our VIPs are off to see a preview of Calendar Girls, a play created from the film of the same name. Fancy a Champagne Preview and a fantastic meal afterwards to discuss the play? Come along and join us!
Â
Kind Regards
