Negotiating the Art World
Mar 17th, 2009 by savvyclub
Dear Friends,
Â
I’m often at a social event somewhere in London and the topic turns to the art world. Apparently, the bottom has fallen out of contemporary art and stuffed sharks and unmade beds aren’t worth what they used to be. So, I thought I’d offer a few tips to negotiating the Art World on a personal level.
Â
TIP 1: It’s much easier to buy than sell. You should buy a piece of art because you love it, and because it becomes a talking point at all of your social events and occasions.
Â
TIP 2: Art is a volatile market, it can often reap high rewards, but there is a strong element of risk involved too. Unless you can buy a Picasso, the risk is often greater than the reward.
Â
TIP 3: Visit the galleries and take your friends. Why not spend an afternoon with your friends visiting the art galleries; public and private, there are literally hundreds in London. You need to educate your sense of taste, because art is such a personal thing.   A friend of mine in the art world suggests hanging around the smaller galleries or going to art school shows. This is often the way to pick up great pieces of art for less.
Â
TIP 4:  Could you host an art showing? Imagine a social event in your own home, canapés, champagne and exhibiting the work of a new, young artist whilst your guests mingle and chat.  You’ve become a patron of the arts for the cost of a cocktail party! You’ve also built a relationship with a young artist, and in the arts, it’s all about whom you know.

Later this month, we’re heading off for dinner and an exclusive private viewing of Francis Bacon by Giacobetti, do you want to join us? Get in touch.
