Interesting Facts about Halloween
Sep 15th, 2009 by savvyclub
Dear Friends,
Despite having lived in London for nearly twenty years, I am a country-lass at heart. I was brought up in The Chiltern Hills, overlooking the valley, surrounded by thick woods and farmland. It was always a stunning site in October and so Autumn became one of my favourite times of the year. The trees in the beautiful parks across London change their colours and with the coming cold comes warm evenings curled up in front of a fire, or out at the plethora of sophisticated social events going on across London.
One of the best things about this time of year is Halloween. I’m sure you’ll be organising a fun way to spend Halloween, maybe at a fancy dress party, or out on a Ghost Walk around London. Well, I thought I’d make Halloween a bit more fun by offering some little known facts about Halloween. Perhaps you’ll use them as conversation starters at your own Halloween Social Events.
FACT: Halloween has its roots in Irish culture and marked the passing of the old year (now the 31st October) and the beginning of the new (now the 1st November). On the last day of the year, spirits of those that died in the previous year would rise up from their resting places and walk the earth. It was considered an evil night, when the evil Lord of Darkness, Samhain, would search the streets for spirits to steal and take back beneath the ground.
FACT: Halloween (actually it should be Hallowe’en) is also known as All Hallow’s Eve, Samhain, All Hallowtide, The Feast of the Dead and the Day of the Dead.
FACT: The candle that sits in a carved-out pumpkin represents none other than the Devil himself. Perhaps you’re not so keen to put one on your front step now!
FACT: Turnips were originally used in Britain as ‘Jack O’Lanterns’; it was Irish immigrants in America that turned to the pumpkin when turnips were hard to find in the New World.
Here’s to a Happy Halloween, maybe you’ll join us on a Spooky Night Out at one of our fantastic Halloween Social Events that we arrange each year!
Kind Regards
Kim Rix
