Tips: Social Skills for Christmas
Dec 22nd, 2009 by savvyclub
Dear Friends,
Many of you will be out celebrating and enjoying Christmas parties with your colleagues this week. Social skills are vital to the enjoyment of your office party. I’d like to offer some tips on how to best communicate with your office colleagues that will help you to enjoy your Christmas celebrations even more!
DON’T FORGET TO SMILE: People are drawn to people who smile… I love being around happy smiley people, don’t you? I believe smiling is contagious. A smile goes a long way, and makes other people comfortable around you. It also makes you appear successful (even when you’re secretly not feeling so positive).
SPEAK CLEARLY: Too many people look down at their feet and mumble when they’re under pressure or not feeling confident with a situation. Speak slowly and surely, don’t tuck your chin in or speak under your breath. Make sure you look at the person you’re speaking to, smile and project your words with intent, so that they hear each word with clarity.
LISTEN: Do you work in a large office and don’t know your colleagues that well? For clues on what to talk to new people about, simply listen to what they tell you. Their speech will be peppered with clues and topics that you can later use to continue the conversation. But don’t force it, sometimes, when conversation dies, silence and a simple smile is just fine. Never talk over someone, or cut in whilst they’re speaking – it’s the height of rudeness.
EYE CONTACT: They say that the eyes are the door to your soul. Eye contact is very important; it helps people to connect with you. Avoiding eye contact makes people believe you have something to hide. Don’t confuse this with staring at someone; make light eye contact with people you are speaking with.
COMPLAINING: Avoid whining and complaining when you talk to your colleagues. It’s not very professional and it gets old and boring very quickly. Sure it’s fun to connect with someone during times of adversity, but don’t moan about your partner, complain about your job or your boss, it’s yawnsworthy! It’s Christmas afterall, it’s time to put all your woes aside and be merry!
Tomorrow night, members of The SaVVy Club® will be out enjoying their Christmas party. Now that will be a fun evening worth talking about!
Kind Regards
Kim Rix
