Do You Have What It Takes To Be A Good Event Planner?

Dear Friends,
Its wonderful when I hear from people I have inspired to investigate a career in event planning. It is an incredibly exciting and fulfilling job and I love it! But I’m also aware it’s not for everyone.
Yes, it is creative, fun, you meet a lot of people and it seems very simple. But I promise you it’s not. And it really does take a certain kind of personality to be able to do it, and do it well.
These are a few of the qualities that a good event planner has;
Assertiveness
Not afraid to say when they are not happy or something is not good enough. This is especially important when dealing with suppliers. Some think they can get away with giving you something ‘like’ what you asked for. You have to be able to hold your ground and not settle for anything less than the best!
Even with clients sometimes, you have to tell them what is possible and what is not. Know why and relay this politely and professionally but firmly.
Self Starter
You must be able to work for yourself. You need to be able to motivate yourself, manage your workload and carry out your tasks efficiently at all times, because you are the only person you have to answer to.
You need to be able to find and manage clients, look after your business, control your image and do the day-to-day stuff without falling apart. You will know in yourself whether you have the ambition and drive to go it alone!
Great Negotiation Skills
Whether its negotiating a date in a venue, a price far catering or the details of a workshop you need to be able to hold your ground, know when to back down and when you should sign on the line!
Excellent Networking Skills
A lot of this business comes through connections. You are also the face of your business and people want to buy from people they trust. If you are comfortable in networking meetings, friend’s social gatherings and business dinners then you will be fine. It’s all about being able to engage and connect with people.
I am really pleased that I can now offer internships for aspiring event planners. My interns get the best possible experience with me as their mentor and I make sure they get the best possible insight into the business.
Kind regards,
Kim Rix
