Five Ways to Add a Bit of Buzz to Your Parties
Jun 22nd, 2011 by savvyclub
Dear friends of The SaVVy Club®
A successful way to lighten the mood at to your next social event is to give it a specific theme. It’s not just Halloween that licences us to dress up and decorate; any time of the year can be made fun by a well-chosen keynote. Here’s my advice on developing a theme for a party that will turn it into a truly memorable event.
The Theme
This will permeate every aspect of the occasion, so think about it carefully. Here are some suggestions:
- Films: James Bond, African Queen.
- Eras: Twenties, Sixties, and Eighties.
- Historical: Ancient Celts, Romans, Vikings, Medieval, Shakespearean.
- Countries/Cultures: Japanese, African and Australian.
- Colours: black and white, gold or silver.
Party Venue
If you’re hiring a venue, consider how it can express your theme.
Perhaps you can achieve what you what you want with some well-chosen decoration? Or could you hire a location that positively embodies the theme. Imagine a Halloween party in a dark and spooky crypt – you can apply that same logic to any theme/venue. If you want to splash out a bit, you can even hire set, props and costumes from film and television companies to add authenticity.
Party Food
Here you have real scope. For your Roman evening, the guests could recline (in their togas) on sofas (or the floor) eating from low tables piled high with grapes and finger food, and sipping at their goblets of wine … while the boar sizzles gently on the spit.
Costume/Dress
Costume always adds a touch of magic. The moment the first few guests step through the door, the event starts to take on a special quality. Just as actors putting on their costume become transformed into their characters, so will their costume get everyone in the mood for fun.
Party Entertainment
Let your imagine take free rein. For your James Bond evening, hire a not-for-money casino, so that, warmed by their Martinis (shaken not stirred), your guests can enjoy the evening’s games. TVs can be set up around the venue showing DVDs of your favourite Bond films. Apply this logic to any film-themed event (Beatles films and songs for the Sixties, and so on).
Top Tip: Always take the television sound down to zero, so it adds a visual touch without interrupting the event. If you have the budget, why not employ some actors to wander around the venue in costume, perhaps also working as drinks waiters?
If you’re stuck for ideas, browse through a book/video/music shop, and something will soon take your fancy. Alternatively, call me on 0208 989 4886, give me your email address and I’d be happy to send you a list of 100
