Entertainment For Events
Jul 21st, 2011 by savvyclub
Dear friends,
Today I’d like to offer some thoughts about how to organise entertainment for a corporate or private event. It’s probably not often that you’ll want to do this, but it’s one way of creating a really fun atmosphere and an event that everyone will remember.
The kind of entertainment you choose will of course be determined, at least in part, by the overall nature of the occasion. You might wish to give the entire event a theme, such as an historic period, Venice Carnival, Gangsters and Molls, and so on; or use your invitation to suggest a tone and dress code – black tie, grunge, Notting Hill – whatever takes your fancy. Whether you decide on the theme or the entertainment first doesn’t matter, so long as they complement one another.
Whether you want jugglers and acrobats or a live band, actors, magicians or celebrities to entertain your guests, it’s something to plan long in advance, especially if you’re looking a particular group or individual who will already have advance bookings.
Usually, such people are bookable through an event management company or agency, but you’ll need to find out who represents them. If they don’t have a full website, that’s not always easy. This is perhaps where I might be able to guide you (see below).
It’s always good to lay on more than one source of entertainment at your event. Always keeping to your theme, you could hit them two ways. A close-up magician or a caricaturist could be followed by an appropriate musical offering, from a string quartet to a rock band (if your venue will run to it).
But don’t play it too safe! There’s a whole world out there, of belly dancers and fire-eaters, opera singers and living statues, and a hundred types of dancers. The more daring and original your choice, the memorable will be the event.
However, there’s also the small matter of cost. Bringing in performers will add a substantial amount to your expenditure, so plan carefully. After the hiring of a venue and the cost of
catering, entertainment will probably constitute the next largest outlay. From my
experience, it can take up to a quarter of your budget.
