Developing a Theme for your Party or Social Event
Sep 20th, 2011 by savvyclub
Dear Friends,
A successful way to add a touch of class to your next social event is to give it a specific theme. It’s not just Halloween that allows us to dress up and decorate; any time of the year can be made fun by a well-chosen theme. Here’s my advice on developing a theme for a party that will turn it into a unique and memorable social event.
The Theme
The theme will become linked to every other aspect of your social event, so think about it carefully. Here are a few suggestions:
Films: James Bond, African Queen.
Eras: Twenties, Sixties, and Eighties.
Historical: Romans, Vikings.
Countries/Cultures: Japanese, African and Australian.
Colours: Black & White, Silver, Gold.
Venue
If you’re hiring a venue, consider how the venue can be worked into your theme.
Do you simply need to decorate the venue? Or could you hire somewhere that contributes to the theme. Imagine a Halloween party in a dark and spooky crypt, well; you can apply that same logic to any theme/venue. When you have the budget for it, you can easily hire set, props and costumes from film and television companies to decorate your venue.
Food
Suit the food to the event, at a Roman evening; the guests could eat at long tables laden with finger food, whilst a boar roasts on a spit. Guests are offered goblets of wine rather than glasses.
Costume/Dress
Costume always adds a touch of magic to the themed social event, as soon as even the first few imaginatively dressed guests arrive; the event starts to take on a special quality. Just like actors putting on their costume become transformed into their characters, so costume will soon help everyone to get in the mood for your social event.
Entertainment
Be imaginative, for a James Bond evening, hire in a ‘fun’ casino, so while everyone drinks Martinis (shaken not stirred), your guests can enjoy the evening’s games. TVs can be set up around the venue showing DVDs of your favourite Bond films. Apply this logic to any film themed event. Even as a Sixties themed evening, you could show Beatles films, or whatever suits your theme.
Top Tip: Always take the television sound down to zero, so it adds a visual touch without interrupting the event. When you have the budget, why not employ some actors to wander around the venue in costume, this can make your themed social event seem even more special!
If you’re stuck for ideas, browse through a book/video/music shop, something will catch your eye! Alternatively, email me (kim@savvyclub.co.uk) and I’d be happy to send you a FREE list of 100 party theme ideas to get you started.
