The SaVVy Club® is well into the flow of things with their latest exclusive event; inviting members on a one-off tour of London’s historical sewers and allowing them the chance to glimpse the rarely seen, yet beautiful architecture below the city streets.
Dress code for the day starts a little differently to usual but as safety is paramount, members will be provided with full protective clothing before being lowered five metres down a manhole into the sewer system itself.
From here the tour will wade its way through the nine foot in diameter barrel tunnels.
To accommodate the tour, Thames Water will have reduced the flow of water to a depth of nine inches.
Be sure to bring a simple camera (you will be wearing two pairs of gloves!) to record the ornate architecture and quality of the historical brickwork
After the 20 minute guided tour, members will re-surface and continue to Abbey Mills pumping station, more commonly known as the ‘Cathedral of Sewage’ because of its elaborate grandeur.
Following a full tour (both inside and out) Thames Water consultant Ben Nithsdale will give an insightful and entertaining talk on the history of Thames Water and the intriguing development of the sewer systems over the last hundred years.
The day is topped with a lovely and hard earned delicious lunch to satisfy the appetite of even the most hardened explorer.
